Announcing the MEXICO 66 GDX, a collaborative model themed after the Shinkansen

MEXICO 66 GDX

As a brand originating in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture in 1949, Onitsuka Tiger is participating in the Hyogo Destination Campaign with Hyogo Prefecture municipalities, tourist enterprises and six of the companies in the Japan Railways Group. In the interest of promoting sustainability in local resources, we announce a collaborative model, the MEXICO 66 GDX.

The design of the collaborative model is inspired by the coloration of three Shinkansen trains departing from and arriving at Hyogo Prefecture. These are the 500 Series, the N700S Series, and the Class 923 Doctor Yellow. The shoes go on sale at Onitsuka Tiger stores starting with the launch of the Hyogo Destination Campaign on Saturday, July 1st 2023.

The uppers are made with Kobe leather, crafted according to traditional methods by artisans in Himeji, a leading leather production site in Japan. Pearl processing brings out the brilliancy of the Shinkansen bodies. The embroidered, three-dimensional Onitsuka Tiger stripe uses high-density threads, suggesting the heftiness of the Shinkansen bodies. While the stripe is nearly of the same color as the upper, the slight distinction creates depth, producing a refined effect.

Illustrations of each train are printed on the insole. The special shoebox uses Banshu fabric produced in the Kita-Harima region of Hyogo Prefecture, and is packaged with a tote bag with the coloration motifs of each Shinkansen.

As part of this collaboration, a hands-on experience in the form of a miniature shoes workshop is being held at the ASICS Sports Museum six times in total. Participants will assemble small shoe parts modeled after the theme of the collaboration, producing minature shoes approximately 8 centimeters in length. Reservations for the workshop can be made at Onitsuka Tiger’s official online store beginning on Friday, June 30th, 2023.

■Hyogo Terroir Journey

A new travel project promoted by Hyogo Prefecture. The aim is to create abundant local societies in which residents can take pride and in which they wish to continue living. “Terroir” is a French word indicating “the characteristics of a particular area of land.” Hyogo Prefecture is blessed with a variety of natural features. As we enjoy learning about the roots and backgrounds that produced the types of food and culture that have taken hold in each part of the prefecture, we will familiarize ourselves with the mindsets and skills of the people who have inherited them. ■Hyogo Destination Campaign (July 1st to September 30th, 2023)

The Destination Campaign is run by six of the companies in the Japan Railways Group in conjunction with local municipalities and tourist enterprises. It is the largest tourism campaign in Japan, in operation continuously since 1987. Between July and September 2023, the campaign will be held in Hyogo Prefecture for the first time in 14 years. Various plans are on offer during the campaign, and visitors are expected from all around the country.
