2023 Fall/Winter Collection Presented at Milan Fashion Week!
On Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at 9 P.M. local time in Italy, Onitsuka Tiger presented its 2023 Fall/Winter Collection at the Milan Fashion Week under the guidance of Creative Director Andrea Pompilio.
The theme of the collection was “Urban Layering.” The kimono is a characteristic example of layering, an indispensable element in Japanese culture with traditions passed down through the ages. The kimono starts with an extremely lightweight juban (kimono undergarment). This is covered with layers of clothing of varied weight, tied in place with a wide obi (belt). The 2023 Fall/Winter Collection couples layering of this kind with the flowing, oversize tailoring that is an essential part of Japanese fashion culture.
Andrea Pompilio has extracted the essence by filtering it through Onitsuka Tiger’s DNA. The resulting collection shines a spotlight on more urban aesthetics while preserving the active spirit.
The focus is particularly on contemporary wardrobe adaptable to various climates, the key to which is Urban Layering. This offers the warmth and lightness demanded by contemporary city life, more of which is now spent indoors.
Oversized coats with needle-punched crafted eco fur. Transparent tailored coats with pleasant feeling melton and visible padding on the back, decorated with large knit martingales. The crispiness of melton is used in jackets and coats with three oversized buttons.
A voluminous item at the show that attracted attention was a mega anorak from Japan’s first downwear brand, Zanter. In 1956, when the first Antarctic research expedition was undertaken and Zanter began supplying downwear, Onitsuka Tiger provided arctic boots. In 2015 the two companies collaborated for the first time. Onitsuka Tiger and Zanter are both Japanese brands with a reputation for pursuing excellency, and the downwear we have created insists on what is essential. For example, to prevent down separating from the products, we use high-quality virgin down processed with “downproofing” technology.
A characteristic common to all items is that, while layering causes the silhouette to become more voluminous, it never appears bulky. Layering of the bottoms adds the final touch to the look. Baggy pants made of nylon and melton and quilted chiffon short pants with visible padding are layered atop boxer shorts with a heavy feel.
In contrast are tight-fitting suits reminiscent of Alpine racing suits. Atop them can be worn French terry hoodies, giant mohair touch knit turtlenecks, lightweight quilted chiffon shirts with visible padding (a detail that also adorns the outerwear), or rib knit tank tops with tight silhouettes. The sash belt and drawstrings designed into the waists of georgette and chiffon dresses emphasize femininity, and the silhouette flows whether long or short.
The color palette is minimalist, starting with our signature black and including grey and beige with an added tinge of pumpkin orange.
The footwear too is designed with urbanity in mind. Leather ankle boots and knee-high boots are elegant and light. Also presented were new running shoes of high functionality, with innovative soles combining a partially hollow design and GEL technology.
A bold new logo with lettering in Onitsuka Tiger’s signature colors of yellow and black was used at the 2023 Fall/Winter Collection.
