Before Kihachiro Onitsuka founded Onitsuka Corporation (today known as ASICS) in 1949, there were no Japanese companies that specialized in making sports shoes. Then a high school basketball coach asked Kihachiro Onitsuka to come up with a special shoe that would be suited for sudden stops and quick dashes in indoor gymnasiums.
